MEET WBB

#MeetWBB is an effort run by the World Bachelor in Business students since 2016. Launched by Amber Huang, Lavina Lim and Olivia Spivey from Class of 2019, #MeetWBB was inspired by the hugely popular “Humans of New York,” which feature simple portraits of New Yorkers together with a vignette about some aspect of their life. "I wanted to write about things in an unbiased way. The motivation was always to make people more aware of the news in a relatable way. Even six years ago, news was so sensationalized, and it's only getting worse. Things come up in the news, and then the next day you'll never hear about them again. Do you remember when nearly 300 girls were kidnapped by Boko Haram? This was in 2014 — it's been...

"Growing up outside of New York, I thought I had the world in a city. I entered this program with a sort of superiority complex regarding where I was from. To be honest, I used to only see WBB as an opportunity to go around the world, knowing that at the end of it all, I'd be returning home.

Then, it took me a total of five days to say ‘I love Hong Kong.' It was a very quick love...

"I feel very much on the line between Asian and American.

Growing up in Kentucky as a first generation Chinese American, I had this preconceived idea that being Asian American had certain expectations. I felt that by doing certain activities or expressing interest in certain things that were outside this identity, I was contradicting everything that I was 'supposed' to...

"I've always thought of myself as a dichotomy. In my head, there are two of me's constantly battling each other. Some days, I just want to get a job as a cashier at Best Buy, watch football with friends on the weekends, and sit cozily in my own bubble of culture. Other days, I want to explore, learn how other people see the world, and ultimately become less complacent in being just...

"Once, I went to Sri Lanka and my parents took me to an orphanage. We did this thing called dhana, which means giving, so we brought lunch for these kids. I mean, I was a picky 6 year old who had a Barbie pink room filled with toys; going to this orphanage to see that they didn't have sheets or toys, and they ate everything on their plate…

The whole day was pretty shocking to me,...

"I have this matching tattoo with my older sister— it's the coordinates of our home in Italy. She asked me to get it right after I committed to WBB. I hesitated at first: on one hand, getting the tattoo showed how much I cared about our relationship, but on the other, it represented a choice that lasted forever. It symbolized my responsibility.

I aspire to have an international...

"When you have someone else to believe in you more than you believe in yourself in a certain moment, it's invaluable. It can change your world. It did for me.

This past summer I biked from Amsterdam to Barcelona for a month, through a company that offers biking trips for high school students. I had to bike 90 miles a day, and it wasn't just on a flat road. We went through places like...

"It's hard to pack your life into a few 50 pound bags.

I always carry two sets of things with me everywhere I travel. One is a set of tokens, and the other is a folder of letters. I have this metal bookmark from Korea that a friend from my freshman year at USC gave to me as a goodbye gift, and a keychain that my best friend from Austin gave to me. It has a Taiwanese lantern—one of...
